Mrs. Gina Pleak

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2009-2010 school year. The staff is ready to work hard each and every day to make WES the best environment for students to learn.

WES has again received the Acuity grant from the Indiana Department of Education to use an on-line assessment program for grades 3-5. It will be given three times/year in the ISTEP+ tested subject areas (English/Language Arts (3-5), Math (3-5), Science (4), and Social Studies (5).) The test results will predict how students will do on ISTEP+ and which standards they have and have not mastered. Information learned about students from these assessments will be used to align instruction and provide the appropriate interventions to students.

WES also received the Mclass grant from the IDOE this year grades K-2. Mclass Reading 3D and Math consists of DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills), Text Reading & Comprehension and Math assessments. The assessments will be administered to students at least three times/year. These assessments measure how successfully a child is progressing in the critical skills that underlie success in early reading and math. They assess several early reading and math skills and uses the child's status in these areas to predict how likely it is that he will be successful in school. Again, information learned about students from these assessments will be used to align instruction and provide the appropriate interventions to students.

Our goals this school year are to make AYP (adequate yearly progress) as determined by No Child Left Behind, increase our attendance rate, improve technology in the classrooms to assist with instruction, adopt a new math series to better meet our students' needs, and make appropriate interventions to assist students with their learning.

I would like to thank the PTO for the new playground equipment and the other improvements made to the playgrounds this summer. I feel very fortunate that WES has such a supportive and active PTO. These new additions don't only benefit our students but the community as well. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

For this year to be successful, we need staff, parents and community members to work together to promote the importance of learning. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. The school office number is 765-525-6505, and my e-mail is gpleak@ses.k12.in.us. I hope you have a wonderful school year and look forward to seeing you at WES events.

Working, Excelling, Succeeding
